Luxury vinyl is not one installation system. Two common approaches are floating click-lock and direct glue-down, and each changes how the finished floor reacts to the substrate, traffic and transitions.
Floating click-lock
Floating planks connect to one another rather than being bonded directly to the substrate. This can simplify replacement and can pair with approved attached pads or separate underlayments. The substrate still has to meet the product's flatness requirements; a floating floor does not hide a bad subfloor.
Glue-down
Glue-down resilient flooring is bonded to the prepared substrate. It is common in many commercial applications and can create a lower-profile transition between adjoining finishes. Because the finish follows the substrate closely, floor preparation is especially visible in the final result.
Compare these factors
- Manufacturer-approved substrate and adhesive
- Required moisture testing or mitigation
- Flatness and patching requirements
- Expansion or perimeter details
- Rolling and adhesive open-time requirements for glue-down products
- Acoustic requirements in multifamily buildings
- Transition heights to tile, carpet and existing wood
- Serviceability if a plank is damaged later
Commercial considerations
For offices, retail, healthcare-adjacent spaces and other commercial interiors, traffic, rolling loads, maintenance program, downtime and the manufacturer's commercial-use classification should drive the decision. A product designed for a residential floating application should not be assumed to be interchangeable with a commercial glue-down specification.
The practical takeaway
Decide the installation method before finalizing the material order. The same visual style can behave very differently depending on how it is attached to the building.
Which LVP installation is better for a concrete slab?
The answer depends on the selected product and the slab's condition. Both methods require the substrate to meet the manufacturer's specifications. Glue-down products also require compatible surface preparation and adhesive; floating systems require the correct perimeter and installation details.
Ask the installer to identify which preparation is known, which conditions remain concealed, and how any additional work will be approved. Do not treat the word “floating” as a promise that preparation can be skipped.
Can a floating floor go under cabinets or a kitchen island?
Follow the exact product's instructions for fixed cabinets, islands and other heavy or permanent installations. Some floating systems need to move freely and can be restricted by fixed objects. Plan the installation sequence and edge details before the cabinetry or flooring scope is finalized.
This also matters when a remodel joins several existing rooms. Doorways, long runs, transitions and changes in substrate should be reviewed against the product's requirements rather than improvised after planks are installed.
Which method makes damaged planks easier to replace?
Glue-down replacement may allow a damaged piece to be removed and rebonded when the system permits it. A click-lock repair may require access from an edge or a manufacturer-approved replacement procedure. The practical answer depends on plank location, locking design, adhesive and availability of matching material.
Ask for the repair approach before buying if localized replacement is important for a rental or busy household. Keep the product label and discuss spare stock. See repairing damaged LVP and other floors.
What changes for an Atlanta office or condo?
An office specification should address rolling chairs, carts, maintenance and the hours when installation can occur. Compare the exact commercial-use classification and the adhesive's return-to-traffic instructions. For an occupied space, include moving furniture and maintaining access in the scope.
A condo adds written building rules and sound requirements. An attached pad does not automatically establish HOA approval, and adding another cushion is not automatically acceptable. Confirm the complete product and underlayment assembly in writing.
